Background

The people of the Southern Province have amassed a vast body of knowledge about the field of construction, and the traditions of temples, dagobas, tanks and houses as well as buildings built during the Dutch period are a testament to the unique talents of our people in the region. The talents of our people can be seen in the constructions that are being made in the contemporary social environment, especially in today's era. As a consultancy services provider for public sector construction, our institution has a unique role to play in providing well-finished and sturdy buildings for the betterment of the people.

We are also proud to note that we are currently one of the leading consultancy services providers in the province. Since its inception in 1991, our organization has been doing a great service in a short period of time and has been instrumental in the prosperity of the people of the region. In 1994, the institution was reorganized with a new look. The new system changed the look of the office and the head of the institution was renamed as the Deputy Chief Secretary (Engineering Services). Under this structure, several new positions were created in the organization. That is

1. Director of Buildings

2. Director of Irrigation

3. Three District Engineer posts were established to cover the three Districts (Galle, Matara and Hambantota) of Southern Province

Apart from this, a number of changes were made in the internal organizational structure as well.

1. Structural Design Unit under Chief Engineering (Structural Design) was Established in 1995.

2. An architectural unit under Chief Architect established in 1996 was bringing a new dimension to the institution.

3. The year 2008 has been a memorable year for our institute as an engineering institute. Because of our institute has been approved by the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka as a recognized institution to provide training to the trainee engineers who are under facing for the Charter Examination of IESL.

Although the Southern Province Engineering Services Institute was initially established with limited human and physical resources, the role of us that we have played so far is significant. The institute originally established with 04 engineers, 88 technical officers and 34 clerical staff, now has 17 Chartered Engineers and Graduate Engineers, 2 Electrical Engineers, 3 Architects, Accountant, Administrative Officer, 233 Technical Officers, 51 Management Service Officers and 3 ICT Assistants, 3 Electricians and 24 others in staff. We are confident that the service rendered by us during that post time and in the present is in the best and second to none.
